What is Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)?
FES delivers small electrical impulses to nerves, helping muscles contract and enabling more natural movement patterns.
We use the L300 GO—a state-of-the-art wireless FES device designed to improve walking ability in people with foot drop or lower limb weakness. It automatically adjusts stimulation based on movement, offering real-time support and enhancing safety, confidence, and independence.
FES with the L300 GO can be integrated into your rehabilitation programme, both in clinic and during everyday activities, helping retrain the brain and body to move more effectively.
How does FES work?
Following a clinical assessment, your physiotherapist will determine if FES is appropriate for your rehabilitation goals. The L300 GO device is then fitted to your lower leg and thigh, where sensors detect your movement and deliver electrical stimulation to activate the correct muscles at the right time.
This helps lift the foot during walking, improving gait, reducing the risk of trips or falls, and encouraging more natural movement. The system adapts in real time, allowing you to walk more confidently both in clinic and in everyday environments. Progress is monitored regularly to ensure optimal results and adjust settings as needed.
Benefits of FES with the L300 GO
1. Improved Walking Ability
The L300 GO helps correct foot drop and lower limb weakness by stimulating the appropriate muscles during walking. This leads to a more natural gait pattern, reduced effort, and increased walking speed and distance.
2. Enhanced Safety and Confidence
By lifting the foot during swing phase, the device reduces the risk of tripping and falling. Clients often report feeling more secure and confident when walking indoors and outdoors.
3. Real-Time Adaptability
Unlike older FES systems, the L300 GO uses smart sensors to detect movement and adjust stimulation instantly. This means it responds dynamically to changes in walking speed, terrain, and posture.
4. Muscle Strengthening and Re-education
Regular use of FES can help strengthen weakened muscles and retrain the brain-muscle connection, especially important in neurological conditions like stroke, MS, or brain injury.
5. Promotes Neuroplasticity
FES encourages the brain to relearn movement patterns by repeatedly activating muscles in a functional context. This supports long-term recovery and improved motor control.
6. Wireless and Comfortable Design
The L300 GO is lightweight, wireless, and easy to wear under clothing, making it suitable for use in clinic, at home, or in the community.
7. Integration into Daily Life
Clients can use the device during everyday activities, not just during therapy sessions. This helps reinforce movement patterns and supports independence.
8. Data Tracking and Progress Monitoring
Therapists can monitor usage and progress, adjusting settings to ensure optimal outcomes. This supports goal-driven rehabilitation and measurable improvements.
