What is Aquatic Physiotherapy?
It is particularly beneficial for individuals with neurological conditions such as stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord injury. The unique properties of water — including buoyancy, resistance, and hydrostatic pressure — allow clients to move more freely, safely, and comfortably than they might on land.
Aquatic physiotherapy is often recommended when:
- Mobility is limited due to weakness, spasticity, or pain
- Balance and coordination are affected by neurological damage
- Land-based therapy is too difficult or painful
- Muscle tone and joint stiffness interfere with movement
- Confidence and fear of falling limit participation in rehabilitation
The water provides a supportive and low-impact environment that enables clients to engage in therapeutic movement with reduced risk and increased comfort.
At Physio Matters, our Aquatic Physiotherapy Programme is tailored to each client’s needs and goals. It may include:
- Water-based strength and mobility exercises
- Balance and coordination training
- Gait re-education and neuromuscular retraining
- Relaxation and pain management techniques
- Use of specialist equipment such as floats, resistance bands, and aquatic treadmills
The warm water helps relax muscles, reduce spasticity, and improve circulation, while the resistance of water enhances strength and endurance. Clients often report improved confidence, reduced pain, and greater enjoyment of movement. [www.number…lytics.com], [www.hydroworx.com]
