What are strains and sprains?
Sprains and Strains are common soft tissue injuries that affect the musculoskeletal system. A sprain involves the stretching or tearing of ligaments — the tough bands that connect bones at a joint — while a strain affects muscles or tendons, which connect muscles to bones. These injuries often result from sudden movements, falls, overuse, or awkward positioning, and can cause pain, swelling, bruising, and restricted movement.
These injuries may be caused by:
- Twisting or overstretching a joint or muscle
- Falls or awkward landings
- Repetitive strain or overuse
- Poor posture or biomechanics
- Inadequate warm-up or fatigue
- Sudden trauma during sport or activity
Sprains are most common in the ankle, knee, and wrist, while strains often affect the back, hamstrings, and shoulders.e the ankle, knee, wrist, shoulder, hamstring, and lower back.
