What is Stroke Rehabilitation?
A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, leading to damage that can affect mobility, speech, cognition, and emotional wellbeing. Rehabilitation focuses on retraining the brain and body through targeted, repetitive activity to promote recovery and improve quality of life.
Stroke rehabilitation may be needed when individuals experience:
- Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body
- Balance and coordination problems
- Changes in sensation, such as numbness or pins and needles
- Muscle stiffness or spasticity
- Difficulty walking, swallowing, or performing daily tasks
- Cognitive or emotional changes
These symptoms vary depending on the type, location, and severity of the stroke, and can significantly impact independence and wellbeing.
At Physio Matters, our Stroke Rehabilitation Programme is tailored to each individual’s needs and may include:
- Neurological assessment and goal setting
- Movement re-education and gait training
- Balance and coordination exercises
- Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) to support muscle activation
- Postural management and seating advice
- Education and support for families and carers
We use evidence-based techniques to promote neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to rewire and adapt — helping clients relearn essential skills and regain independence.
