What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome?
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare but serious neurological condition in which the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves. It can progress rapidly and requires urgent medical attention.
- Tingling or pins and needles – Often starting in the feet and hands.
- Numbness – In the limbs or face.
- Muscle weakness – Typically begins in the legs and may spread to the arms and face.
- Poor coordination or balance – Difficulty walking or climbing stairs.
- Back or leg pain – Sharp, shooting, or aching pain.
- Facial weakness – Drooping muscles, difficulty speaking or swallowing.
- Double vision or eye movement problems
- Loss of reflexes – Such as the knee-jerk reflex.
- Breathing difficulties – In severe cases, chest muscles may be affected.
- Paralysis – May affect legs, arms, or facial muscles.
