10th May 2019

Physio Matters has successfully co-hosted the first Brainwaves Conference in Oldham on Thursday 2 May 2019 focusing on brain injury rehabilitation – led by international speaker and expert Dr David Manchester, Clinical Psychologist and Director of MLR Psychology Consultants, Sydney, Australia.

The 1-day Conference was the first of its kind and held at The Victoria Hotel in Chadderton. Sponsored by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, it brought together over 50 professionals who work in brain injury rehabilitation including physiotherapists, psychologists, nutritionists, case managers, social workers, and lawyers.

The Conference theme was ‘Motivational Interviewing and Brain Injury Rehabilitation’. It was led by Dr Manchester who flew in especially for the event from Sydney. Originally from the UK, Dr Manchester is a psychologist with over 20 years’ experience in hospital and community rehabilitation psychology. He is Principal Psychologist at St Vincent’s Public Hospital in Darlinghurst, a suburb of Sydney, and provides assessment, training and consulting for MLR Psychology Consultants.

The Conference was also supported by key exhibitors at the event – Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, Newby Psychological Services, Munro Therapy Services, Red Pepper Nutrition, Active Case Management and Physio Matters.

Brainwaves was set up by Colin Green of Physio Matters Neurological Ltd and Louise Sheffield of Active Case Management Ltd. It provides free interdisciplinary clinical training every two months at Hollinwood Business Centre in Oldham for professionals working in brain injury rehabilitation.

Colin Green, Clinical Director at Physio Matters said: “We were thrilled to get an international speaker of Dr Manchester’s calibre to lead the Conference, especially on Motivational Interviewing which he has not spoken about in the UK for several years. This is an essential topic for the whole MDT team to help increase engagement with more difficult clients. For physiotherapists, such engagement can be the key to helping our clients achieve their goals and attain positive therapy outcomes.”

Following the success of the Conference this year, Brainwaves plans to host a second conference in Oldham in 2020.

The next free Brainwaves training event is on Thursday 27 June with Sian Riley, Dietitian at Red Pepper Nutrition, who will explore ‘Food for the Brain’.
