Taking data protection seriously – Physio Matters co-hosts workshop on new GDPR laws.

23rd November 2017

A workshop dedicated to giving healthcare practitioners the lowdown on important new data protection laws will take place on 31 January 2018.

Co-hosted by Physio Matters, the Brainwaves one-day workshop will focus on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which comes into force on 25 May 2018. Anyone working in healthcare needs to know about the legislation and how to be compliant – or risk facing heavy fines and damaging publicity. The workshop will be run by expert trainer Alan Lowe of Cordillo.

What is GDPR?

GDPR is a new law relating to data protection. It aims to give control back to EU citizens and residents over their personal data and strengthen data protection, including exporting data outside the EU.

This will be a huge shift in the rules governing the use of personal information. It’s important that healthcare providers know about it as they deal with a large volume of personal data relating to patients, carers and families, as well as their own staff.

The workshop will examine the new GDPR laws and their impact on data handling. It will explore the increase in individuals’ legal rights to access data about them and their family under GDPR, including the need to respond to data access requests within 30 days – a new and shorter deadline which could result in heavy fines if not met.

What counts as ‘personal data’?

According to the European Commission: “personal data is any information relating to an individual, whether it relates to his or her private, professional or public life. It can be anything from a name, a home address, a photo, an email address, bank details, posts on social networking websites, medical information, or a computer’s IP address.”

Sensitive information

“It’s vital that all businesses know what to expect from GDPR and are ready to comply with the new laws in time,” said Colin Green, Clinical Director of Physio Matters. “The workshop will be an excellent way to prepare for the legislation, especially for anyone working in healthcare where we handle a lot of sensitive personal information, often for vulnerable individuals and patients who are unable to consent on their own behalf.”

Brainwaves’ GDPR Training Day runs on Wednesday 31 January 2018 from 9.00am to 5.00pm at Physio Matters offices in Oldham. To find out more, follow the booking link: EventBrite – GDPR Training Dat
